This course is designed to give you the opportunity to explore various sides of the Production Arts Industry in Make-up and Prosthetics.

Why study Production Arts?

Media Make-up and SFX is the study of make up in the TV/Film/Media industry. It is a highly creative course which explores all areas of make-up – from SFX (Special effects), Airbrushing, Beauty, Vintage, Period, Prom, Bridal, Theatrical and prosthetics. Production Arts also explores costume making for productions and editorial fashion photography. Students also explore how to master modern beauty techniques such as cut creasing, foiling, baking, highlighting, contouring, stencilling and much more. Special FX make up covers using alcohol activated palettes, ageing products, creating and sculpting your own prosthetics from gelatine, silicone, gel, wax or latex. All learners are taught how to cast and more advanced learners have cast their own full heads to create full face prosthetic masks.

Learners can progress via university or apprenticeships but are ultimately job ready when leaving the course. Students are also offered full use of a photography studio to create professional portfolios in order to self-promote and sell their new found skills. All learners are encouraged from the offset to create MUA accounts and are fully supported in creating MUA tutorials if they wish.

As most MUA’s work freelance or selfemployed; we have introduced a new unit where students learn what it takes to work in this way. They will research legislations, insurance, book keeping, law and much more to prepare them to work in the industry from the offset. The course offers MAC and Illamasqua affiliation with student discounts. Students can also purchase Illamasqua kits with a fantastic discount of up to 50% off. A full master kit of high end products such as ABH, Illamsqua, MAC, Jeffree Star, OFRA, PLouise, Cover FX and much more are available to students for final pieces and make up photoshoots. This is in addition to an SFX master kit of latex, AA palettes, ageing products, silicones, gelatines, fake bloods, latex, alginates and sculpting materials. Trips include a visit to Bolton University, Bradford University and we have guest speakers ranging from Illamasqua, specialist in drag make up and professional MUA’s to discuss the industry and deliver Q&A sessions to students.

It is strongly recommended that applicants have experience with a creative subject such as Fine Art. Production Arts works in a way that your model is your canvas, so advanced art skills go a long way!

You will need to show a creative body of work, which can take many forms; this can be through a creative GCSE or a personal body of work (portfolio) or a collection of Instagram make up looks you have achieved. Students who have no prior experience will be taught from scratch – but may find the course difficult at first.

One of the biggest advantages of the Studio School is every department has unlimited access to all of the resources on offer. Each department does, however, specialise in an array of core resources. This enable students to get the most out of the resources closest to their chosen subject.
