“Letters hold the secrets of life. In their shapes and sounds can be found everything to make you awesome” - Ian Marshall, English Tutor

It doesn’t matter whether your interests lie in literature, or in the exploration of language, English Language and Literature is a stimulating course that builds on the skills and knowledge acquired at GCSE.

About The Course (AS & A-Level)

The course allows you to creatively explore the links between literary and linguistic methods through a variety of spoken, written and multi-modal texts. Some of the texts you will explore over the course range from Shakespeare and literary classics such as ‘Dracula’ and ‘Frankenstein’, to modern novels like ‘The Kite Runner’ and ‘The Lovely Bones’

Studying English Language and Literature at the Studio School will help you develop invaluable skills in reading critically, analysing and evaluating, and researching independently. These are highly sought after skills for further study and future

Specific Entry Requirements

Students applying must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at C grades with English and Maths. As of 2017, this will include at least a grade 4 (old Grade Cs) in English Language OR Literature as well as Maths. A grade ‘C’ in a GCSE Art-based/creative subject, or level 2 equivalent, would be advantageous for showing your ability to cope with the Level 3 study specialism. Upon gaining an interview for the Art & Design course you must bring with you a Portfolio of work.

When you complete your AS in English at the end of Y12, you can chose to complete with an AS or continue onto A2 in Y13 (provided you have achieved an AS pass grade). A2 is a separate qualification to AS. If you “top up”2 to an A2 A level, your final A2 grade will override your AS grade.

AS Breakdown

  • Paper 1 - 1 hour 30 minutes (50% of AS Level)
  • Paper 2 - 1 hour 30 minutes (50% of AS Level)

A-Level Breakdown

  • Paper 1 – 3 hours (40% of A-Level)
  • Paper 2 – 2 hours 30 minutes (40% of A-Level)
  • Coursework – (20% of A-Level)

One of the biggest advantages of the Studio School is every department has unlimited access to all of the resources on offer. Each department does, however, specialise in an array of core resources. This enable students to get the most out of the resources closest to their chosen subject.

As a student of English Language and Literature, you will have access to all the resources Studio School has on offer. You will be able to take advantage of a wide range of literary resources and technical facilities that will help with your study.

As part of the English A-Level, you will also have access to Kindle Fire Tablets with copies of all your texts pre loaded.

Cross Curricular Resource Sharing & Learning

Thanks to an open plan office style environment, the Studio School is quite literary designed from the ground up to promote collaboration between students. This enables learning to take place not just in lessons but at any time, anywhere. Students share ideas for upcoming projects and provide feedback on current projects. This type of social interaction is such an important skill and something few environments can offer. It’s not just about #CreateYourself, but #ShareLearnImprove.

Trips & Enrichment

As a student of English you will quickly realise that English as a subject surrounds us. From speech in daily conversation to the literature of advertising we are immersed in the subject every day.

To help your exploration of English in all its forms, we offer a mix of visits and enrichment opportunities such as:

  • Working with real life companies like “Sygenta” and “Fresh Young Millionaire Magazine”
  • Theatre Trips
  • Guest Practitioners
  • Lectures
  • Collaborative projects with the Netherhall Learning Campus
  • Exploring and visiting places that bring the context of texts to life.

Outstanding Results

  • 100% achieving at least C grades.
